Type species: Gryllacris aurantiaca Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888
Diagnosis. Fastigium frontis laterally well outlined with slightly elevated rims. Male ninth abdominal tergite in apical area faintly furrowed along midline or with a pair of moderate oval swellings, setose and terminating at apical margin with a pair of short but stout teeth. Hind wings bright yellow or ochre with dark brown bands along cross veins, in some species the dark bands with handles before crossing main veins or running across main veins in full width. The lectotype of X. aurantiaca carries a pair of rather short blunt teeth at apical margin of male ninth abdominal tergite.
Discussion. Xanthogryllacris is close to Prosopogryllacris The species of the latter genus with colored hind wings look almost the same as species Xanthogryllacris . A distinct difference is the shape of the projections of the male ninth abdominal tergite. These are tooth-like, short and stout in Xanthogryllacris but thin, stylus like and often curved in Prosopogryllacris . In the mean, Xanthogryllacris includes more robust species, but there is no general difference concerning size between both genera. There is also some similarity to Caustogryllacris and Lyperogryllacris . The differences between all of these genera should be worked out in more detail and require additional studies.
