Small shrub, dioecious. Pistillate flowers solitary or in clusters, these in interrupted spikes or panicles; bracteoles 2, enlarged, connate almost up to the top, with 2 wings and 4 keels; stigmas 2. Seeds horizontal; embryo annular. One sp., Z. arizonica Standley , endemic to Arizona.
