Type.

Portugal. (lectotype, designated here: illustration in Brotero 1824, tab. 12) .

Notes.

Brotero (1824) published the species with a full description and a detailed illustration of leaves, inflorescence and dissected flowers. The description was based on a specimen cultivated at the Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and believed to have a native origin in Brazil. However, according to Krukoff (1938), the calyx as described and illustrated could indicate an association with the African Erythrina species, and not the American ones. Still, he pointed out that some characteristics depicted might be incorrect, so the name remains unplaced.
