Stickmannia rhizophya (Martius ex Schultes f.) Kuntze (1891: 721) View in CoL , syn. nov.

Type:— BRAZIL. Bahia: Habitat in sylvis ad Almada. Provinciae Bahiensis haud procul ad Oceano, Jan. Martius s.n. (Lectotype [here designated] (or perhaps holotype): M 0086149!)

Distribution: —Restricted to forests in southern Bahia and Minas Gerais.

Habitat:—Dense Ombrophilous Forest.

Notes:—The protologue of D. radicalis provided the following information on the syntypes: “ In silvis primaevis Brasiliae mense Decembri ” and “ In silvis ad Xitopo fluvium, Minarum Generalium, mense Aprili 1818 ”. Nees and Martius (1823) described D. radicalis based on a collection made by Prince Alexander Philipp Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1872–1867) in the region of Ilhéus, Bahia, and a collection made by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794–1868), in the region of Xipotó, Minas Gerais, which is probably on Serra da Mantiqueira in the municipality of Dona Euzébia. The illustration of the species agrees with the specimen from Ilhéus that is deposited at BR (see https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/37012360#page/111/mode/1up). The material from Minas Gerais was not found at M. Therefore, the Prince Wied-Neuwied collection at BR is designated as the lectotype according to Art. 9.12 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012). The illustration in Nees & Martius clearly shows the characteristics of this species. Moraes et al. (2013) studied the collections of Prince Wied-Neuwied at MEL and found an isolectotype of D. radicalis . Although Moraes et al. (2013) indicate that the lectotype of D. radicalis was designated by Aona (2008) in a revision of the genus, this work is an unpublished Ph.D. thesis and thus its nomenclatural content is not considered an effective publication by the Code.

Schultes f. (1830) described D. rhizophya based on a collection by Martius from the region of Ilhéus. After studying the type specimen of D. rhizophya at M it can be confirmed that this species should be treated as a synonym of D. radicalis . The main feature that supports this decision are the congested inflorescences on branches close to the soil on the basal part of the plant.
