Eustenogaster micans View in CoL (de Saussure, 1852)
Ischnogaster micans de Saussure, 1852: 24.
? Ischnogaster ornatifrons Cameron, 1902: 105 .
Based on Carpenter and Kojima (1997: 26) and van der Vecht’s unpublished note, we treat Ischnogaster ornatifrons Cameron, 1902 , as a probable synonym of E. micans , which, however, should be confirmed in a future study. Eustenogaster micans View in CoL is a species that is similar to E. calyptodoma , but can be easily distinguished from the latter by the following characters: female scutellum strongly convex (Fig. 37), with median carina; female sixth metasomal tergum with sharp spine; male digitus ventrally projected and with small spine ( Fig. 59 View FIGURE 59 U), ventroproximal margins of pennis valves with large serration (Fig. 38). As pointed out by Sakagami and Yoshikawa (1968) and Yoshikawa et al. (1969) the nest architecture is distinctly different between E. micans View in CoL and E. calyptodoma . That is, in E. micans View in CoL the envelope is made by extension of outer walls of the peripheral cells while the nest envelope of E. calyptodoma is independent of the comb. The envelop of an E. micans View in CoL nest has fin-like extensions on the outer surface ( Yoshikawa et al. 1969, plate 28; Ohgushi et al. 1983, cited as Eustenogaster View in CoL sp. [E1]), which are absent in E. calyptodoma ( Yoshikawa et al. 1969; Ohgushi et al. 1990).
The occurrence of E. micans in Yunnan, China (recorded by Dong & Otsuka 1997) needs confirmation.
