25. Pachycephalus Wiedemann, 1830a: 152 .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Eristalis chrysopygus Wiedemann, 1819 ; Syrphus zonalis Fabricius, 1794 ; Syrphus crassus Fabricius, 1794 (with “ Syrphus megacephalus ” Fabricius, 1794 in synonymy); Syrphus errans Fabricius, 1794 ; Eristalis incisus Wiedemann, 1830 .
TYPE SPECIES: Eristalis chrysopygus Wiedemann, 1819 , by present designation .
CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Stephens, 1826; senior (but invalid) synonym of Phytomia Guérin, 1833 [ teste Thompson & Vockeroth (1989: 451) ].
FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .
REMARKS: Although Thompson & Vockeroth (1989: 451) indicated that Pachycephalus was an unavailable name, an examination in this study of Wiedemann (1830a) showed that it is available as a name given for the five nominal species of Eristalis Meigen in Wiedemann’s section “A” of that genus ( Wiedemann, 1830a: 152–156). There is no evidence that Wiedemann (1830a) did not wish to use the name for a genus-group within Eristalis and there is no clear evidence that the name was proposed in synonymy with the entire genus Eristalis as indicated in Thompson & Vockeroth (1989). Since no type species has previously been designated, we here designate as type species the first of the five species originally included in section “A” ( Eristalis chrysopygus Wiedemann, 1819 ). Pachycephalus is preoccupied by Stephens, 1826 and the oldest available name for species in this genus is Phytomia Guérin, 1833 , which has the same type species. Since the name has not been used as a valid taxon since its appearance in Wiedemann (1830a), it could be suppressed as a nomen oblitum, but there is no need since it is preoccupied.
[ Pangonia View in CoL ] Wiedemann, 1818a: 4 [1819a: 7, 31; 1828: iii, 87; 1830a: 620].
CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Pangonius Latreille, 1802 View in CoL or subsequent usage of Pangonia Latreille, 1810 View in CoL .
FAMILY: TABANIDAE .
REMARKS: Although satisfying the criteria as an emendation in these works (similar changes in spelling of two or more names from “us” to “a”), it is unclear if this action was meant as an emendation, or was a misspelling, or if Wiedemann was following the spelling in Latreille (1809). Because of this doubt, we invoke ICZN Code Article 33.5 and treat all usages of Pangonia by Wiedemann in the above listed works as incorrect subsequent spellings. The earliest emendation we have found using the spelling Pangonia is by Latreille (1809: 281) for Pangonius Latreille, 1802 , n. syn.
[Pephritis] Wiedemann, 1828: xi.
CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Tephritis Latreille, 1804 .
FAMILY: TEPHRITIDAE .
REMARKS: This misspelling was corrected in the errata in Wiedemann (1828: 604).
