Notes
Flabellate: either fan-shaped or branching. Forms short stalk with fleshy, blade-like lobes or erect, expanded leaves. Maximum recorded size: 31 cm across. The surface appears rough and crinkly, corrugated longitudinally with shallow ridges. Colour orange to pink.
Clathria (Thalysias) vulpine is a closely related species that cannot be distinguished from S. carteri without examining spicules under the microscope; however, since it has its type locality in Australia, we are considering most specimens observed to belong to S. carteri (Fig. 169).
