Syntypes. Heterophlebus ambiguus : without indication of number and sex (not at MNNC, presumably lost), Chile: Valdivia .

Heterophlebus melanogaster : two females (not at MNNC, presumably lost), Chile: Corral and San Juan .

Distribution. Chile: Región de Los Ríos: Valdivia Province (Corral, Valdivia), Ranco Province (San Juan); Región de Los Lagos: Llanquihue Province (Casa Pangue, Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas); Chiloé Province (Castro, Isla Mechuque).

Remarks. Both species were described on the same page by Philippi (1865) and H. melanogaster was described before H. ambiguus . Both were synonymized with a question mark “?” by Collin (1933) and this nomenclatural act was followed by subsequent authors ( Smith, 1967; Yang et al., 2007) with no comments. This dubious synonymy never was checked, nor confirmed and here we are maintaining the synonymies as considered by Collin (1933).
