Pyrogaster was the most diverse genus at the Serra dos Órgãos, notably more speciose than even ill-defined (composite) taxa, such as Lucidota (see above). This genus can be diagnosed by clypeus connate or fused to frons, head wider than distance between hypomeres, tarsal claw with anterior and posterior halves not bifid; and lanterns present on abdominal sterna VI and VII. Includes both nocturnal and diurnal species, with diurnal species having significantly smaller eyes and lanterns than nocturnal species, and a less pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males usually have overall greater eyes and lanterns than females, but smaller mandibles; sexes are otherwise very similar. For convenience, species will be presented in four groups, based on their overall similarity. Immature stages unknown.
