Two species of Psectrotanypus Kieffer View in CoL have been recorded from Japan, P. v a r i u s (Fabricius) and P. orientalis Fittkau. P. v a r i u s was recorded by Tokunaga (1937: 35, as Anatopynia varia ). However, Fittkau (1962: 140) stated that Tokunaga’s species under the name varius is not identical to the European species based on the wing illustration given by Tokunaga. Fittkau (1962) considered Tokunaga’s P. v a r i u s to be a new species naming it P. orientalis . However, Sasa and Okazawa (1992a, b) and Sasa (1993) regarded P. orientalis to be conspecific with the European P. v a r i u s although they confirmed that the wing marking of European P. v a r i u s as illustrated by Fittkau (1962, fig. 59) is less distinct than in P. orientalis . We regard P. orientalis to be a good species.
Macropelopia togawidea and Krenopelopia togatibea should be placed as synonyms of Psectrotanypus orientalis (characters of Krenopelopia Fittkau in parentheses) as both have cross-vein RM rather long and at an acute angle to M1+2 (RM comparatively short and at a more obtuse angle to M1+2), tibial spurs with main tooth one-third of spur length and with 12–14 lateral teeth (spurs slender, main tooth about half as long as spur, with 3–4 lateral teeth), pulvilli distinct (absent), tergite IX without row of setae (with row of setae) ( Figs. 9–10 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ).
