Lectotype (Torrey & Gray, Fl. N. America 2: 180. 1841): [icon] "Virga aurea Carol. Linariae Monsp. foliis" in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 2: 412, t. 306, f. 394. 1732. - Typotype: Herb. Sherard No. 1877 ( OXF) .

Current name: Euthamia caroliniana (L.) Greene View in CoL ( Asteraceae ).

Note: Specific epithet spelled “carolinianum” in the protologue.

There remains uncertainty about the identity of the plant illustrated by Dillenius (see Fernald in Rhodora 46: 323-330. 1944; Reveal in Taxon 40: 505-508. 1991).
