Genus CYPHOMYIA Wiedemann View in CoL View at ENA

Cyphomyia Wiedemann, 1819: 54 View in CoL . Type species, Stratiomys cyanea Fabricius, 1794 View in CoL by designation of Duponchel in d’Orbigny (1844: 548; see Evenhuis & Thompson, 1990: 234).

[For nomenclatural history, see Woodley (2001: 157–158); no changes are proposed here.]

Cyphomia pubiventris Rondani

Ciphomia pubiventris Rondani, 1863: 86 View in CoL . ST 1 ♀ [ MZUN]: South Africa: Cape of Good Hope. [error, not Afrotropical; see below].

This species was described from “ South Africa ”, but it is clear that this is an error in the locality information. There are 73 species of Cyphomyia View in CoL in the New World (only two reaching into the Nearctic region), nine Oriental species and only one species in the Palearctic ( China) and Australian regions, but there has been no specimen of this genus found in Africa. We were able to study the syntype female specimen from photographs ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ) (kindly supplied by A. Raspi & N. Maio), and it is a typical South American species and should be removed from the Afrotropical fauna.
