Diagnosis. face and frons black, scape and pedicel black setose, postpedicel with black setae on basal half of dorsum; pronotum black; scutum dull black, medial and paramedial stripes black velvet; wing uniformly smoky black; legs black, coxae yellow setose; abdomen covered with dull black pruinescence, tergite 1 with black and white setae on lateral margins, posterior and lateral margins of tergite 2–3 with long, yellowish white setae.
Redescription. Holotype female. Measurements: body 32 mm; wing 25 mm. Head: face and frons black, lower side of face with golden pruinescent spot; mystacal setae black; frons with tuft of black setae laterally; orbital setae black; ocellar tubercle black with black setae; postocular setae black; occiput black, upper occipital setae black and lower occipital setae yellow; palpus black with black setae; proboscis black with black setae ventrally; antennae black, scape and pedicel with black setae, postpedicel with sparse yellowish pruinescence, black setae on basal half of dorsum. Thorax: second cervical sclerite black with black setae; antepronotum and postpronotum black with thin black setae; postpronotal lobe with black setae; proepisternum with thin black setae; scutum dull black, medial and paramedial stripes velvety black; dorsocentral setae undeveloped; three notopleural, two or three supra-alar and four postalar setae; scutellum black, with pair of long black marginal setae, pleura black; anepisternum with black setae. Legs: entirely black, coxae with yellow setae, hind coxa with black and yellow setae mixed, other setae of legs black; yellowish pulvillus, claws black. Wing: uniformly darkened, alula slightly lighter; halter black. Abdomen: matte black covered with short black setae; tergite 1 with black and white setae laterally; posterior and lateral margins of tergites 2 and 3 with long, yellowish, white setae; posterior margin of tergite 4 with few yellowish-white setae; sternites black with long setae on first and second segments. Terminalia: not studied; the terminalia of the holotype, the only known specimen, has been lost.
Male: Unknown.
Comments. Neodiogmites tenebrosus can be easily separated from other species of the genus by the yellow setae on lower occiput and coxae, besides wings entirely smoky black.
Geographic record. Brazil: Bahia.
Type material examined. Holotype ♀: BRAZIL, Bahia: Jequié, xii.1932, Camargo et al. ( MZUSP).
