Cainocreadium musculometra ( Bravo-Hollis & Manter, 1957) View in CoL n. comb.
Synonyms: Podocotyle musculometra Bravo-Hollis & Manter, 1957 ; Apopodocotyle musculometra ( Bravo-Hollis & Manter, 1957) Pritchard, 1966 .
Records. From the Mexican barred snapper, Hoplopagrus guentherii Gill (Lutjanidae) [as H. guntheri Gill ] off California by Bravo-Hollis & Manter (1957).
Remarks. Pritchard (1966a) transferred this species to Apopodocotyle and Cribb (2005a) synonymised Apopodocotyle with Cainocreadium , but considered A. musculometra a synonym of H. mutabile because the excretory vesicle extends into the forebody and the host is a lutjanid. However, this species does not belong in Hamacreadium because the genital pore is medial and the vitelline follicles are restricted to the hindbody. It is most consistent with the concept of Cainocreadium , which requires a medial pore and includes both species with an excretory vesicle terminating in the forebody and species with vitelline follicles restricted to the hindbody. Cainocreadium musculometra can be distinguished from all other species in the genus by the combination of these two characters. Infection in lutjanids is not typical of Cainocreadium species.
