Type Locality: Japan, Honshu, "In the neighbourhood of Yokohama".
Vernacular Names: Japanese Mountain Mole.

Subspecies Euroscaptor mizura subsp. othai Imaizumi 1955
Distribution: Mountains of Honshu ( Japan).
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Imaizumi (1970 b) and Abe et al. (1991) included this species in the genus Euroscaptor , while Corbet (1978 c) placed it in Talpa . Three populations have been named, of which othai represents "probably a distinct species", according to Imaizumi (1970 b); a view supported by Yoshiyuki (1988 b). Karyotype (2n = 36, FN = 52) described by Kawada et al. (2001).
