Discussion: Reviewed by Hückinghaus (1961). Placed in the Caviinae by most workers but a sister taxa relationship between Kerodon and Hydrochoeris has been consistently observed ( dos Reis, 1994; Rowe and Honeycutt, 2002; Woods, 1984).
