Taxonomic history. Uchida (1939) transferred this species to Melanichneumon Thomson, 1893 and Townes et al. (1965) to Stenaoplus Heinrich, 1938 .
Current taxonomy. Stenaoplus maculipes ( Smith, 1874) ( Ichneumonidae : Ichneumoninae : Ichneumonini ).
Type number. Type 3b.360. Specimen # NHMUK010634925 About NHMUK
Type status. Holotype.
Sex. Female.
Type locality. Hyôgo Prefecture, Honshû, Japan.
Label data. First label, ‘ Type /CM’ (round label, with red margin; first line printed and second line handwriting); second label, ‘B.M. TYPE /HYM./3b.360’ (square label; first and second lines printed and third line handwriting); third label, ‘Hiogo/ Japan.’ (square label; first line handwriting and second line printed); fourth label, ‘cf. Walker Cist. Ent. 1874. p. 304’ (square label; handwriting); fifth label, ‘ Cryptus /maculipes/ Type Smith’ (square label; handwriting).
Condition. Good, but right antenna after fourth flagellomere, right hind wing, and tarsomeres of left hind leg are lost.
Remarks. Although Smith (1874) described this species based on one female specimen, Walker (1874) stated that the male was described by Smith (1874) (see Walker 1874: 304, L13) and pointlessly described the female again. Moreover, Morley (1913b)
indicated that Walker’s female and Smith’s female specimens are not conspecific and the former belongs in Trichocryptus Thomson, 1873 (= Apsilops Förster, 1869 ).
