Taxonomic history. Uchida (1939) transferred this species from Ichneumon Linnaeus, 1758 to Exephanes Wesmael, 1845 ; then, Townes et al. (1965) transferred it from Exephanes to Pterocormus Förster, 1850 (= Ichneumon ).

Current taxonomy. Ichneumon rufitarsis Smith, 1874 ( Ichneumonidae : Ichneumoninae : Ichneumonini ).

Type number. Type 3b.1810. Specimen # NHMUK010634918 About NHMUK

Type locality. Hyôgo Prefecture, Honshû, Japan.

Type status. Holotype.

Sex. Female.

Label data. First label, ‘Type’ (round label, with red margin; printed); second label, ‘B.M. TYPE /HYM./3b.1810’ (square label; first and second lines printed and third line handwriting); third label, ‘ Japan./Hiogo’ (square label; first line printed and second line handwriting); fourth label, ‘74/14’ (round label; handwriting); sixth label, ‘ Ich. rufitarsis / Type. Smith’ (square label; handwriting).

Condition. Rather good, but the antennae, third to fifth tarsomeres of right fore leg, fifth tarsomere of left fore leg, fourth to fifth tarsomeres of mid legs, and second to fifth tarsomeres of hind legs are all lost.
