Diatrype undulata (Pers.) Fr., Summa View in CoL veg. Scand., Section Post.: 385. 1849 ( Figs. 13 View FIGURES 9–13 , 22 View FIGURES )
Specimens examined:— CHINA. Heilongjiang Province: Fuyuan vicinity, on dead branches of Betula spp. , 4 August 2004, L. Vasilyeva, VLA P-2818; Jilin Province: Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, Huangsongpu area, on dead branches of Betula sp. , 27 August 2013, L. Vasilyeva, VLA P-2818; vicinity of The Red Leaves Valley of Jiaohe, Shasongling area, on dead branches of Betula sp. , 30 August 2013, H.-X. Ma, FCATAS-302.
Stromata usually widely effused, dark brown, studded with small stellate ostiloles, surrounded by a black line within the substrate; perithecia monostichous or distichous, singly erumpent, 150–200 µm diam., with short ostiolar necks. Asci cylindrical, paraphysate, 25–30 × 3.5–4.5 µm in spore bearing part, stalks of different length, containing 8 biseriate ascospores, apical ring amyloid. Ascospores one-celled, allantoid, yellowish, 5–7 × 0.9–1.3 µm long.
The concept of D. undulata should be clarified further, since D. dearnessii Ellis et Everh. (North American Fungi 2526, on dead birch limbs, London, Canada, Oct. 1889, J. Dearness) is known (FH, L) from eastern North America, and taking into account the possible biogeographical patterns, exactly D. dearnessii could be found in north-eastern Asia. On the other hand, the latter species was not described legitimately, its named could be reduced to D. undulata , and Rappaz (1987) has already assigned one of the north-eastern specimens of Diatrype on Betula (from Kamchatka Peninsular) to D. undulata .
