[[ Pachypops Gill View in CoL View at ENA ZBK ]]
Introduction
The species of Pachypops Gill ZBK are small to moderate size (largest with about 180 mm SL), occurring in South America throughout the Orinoco, Amazonas, Essequibo, Corantijn, and Approuague drainages. The genus, proposed for Micropogon trifilis Mueller and Troschel (1848) ZBK , was described based on material that originated in Guyana, and was first characterized by having three barbels, small pores on the chin, and a small, inferior, horizontal mouth.
Jordan and Eigenmann (1889), Campos (1942), Fowler (1954), and Chao (1978) studied aspects of the taxonomy of the genus, and of these studies, the first is the most complete in terms of geographic coverage, type-specimen examination, and diagnosis, but does not allow the recognition of all of the valid species of Pachypops ZBK . In order to resolve this problem, this paper provides a complete taxonomic revision of Pachypops ZBK , including the redescriptions of all recognized species and the description of a new species.
