This genus is characterized by grass-like, linear leaves with subdigitate fertile branches. Closely related to, and sometimes united with Schizaea , which has pinnate fertile appendages and filamentous (vs. tuberous in Actinostachys ) gametophytes. A pantropical genus of about 16 species.

Range:— USA (Florida); West Indies; Mexico to Guianas, Bolivia (BE, LP), and Brazil (also cited from Uruguay by Mickel & Smith 2004).

Ecology:— Rare, but probably overlooked due to its grass-like habit; terrestrial on sand and sandy soil in open forests and clearings; to 250 m.
