Stegnoclava zorropsis Opitz , new species

Holotype. ♀. Costa Rica: Heredia, Est. Biol. La Selva , 50–150 m, 10°26′N 84°01′W, Proy. ALAS, INBio-OET, second label with M/12/421, 01 Agosto 1995, Bosque primario ( INBC). Paratypes. Two specimens. Costa Rica: Heredia, Estación Biologica La Selva , 10°26′N 84°01′W, 14- VI-1993, secondary forest ( WOPC, 1); idem, 1-XI- 1993 ( INBC, 1) .

Diagnosis. From superficially similar specimens of S. velatis , members of this species differ by having an angular pronotal tubercle and the antennal club is more robust (compare Figs. 30–31 and Figs. 13–14).

Description. Size: Length 6.1 mm; width 1.8 mm. Form ( Fig. 130): Long rectangular. Integumental color ( Fig. 40): Cranium bicolored, lower frons and dorsolateral epicranium yellow, upper frons, vertex, and middiscal epicranium, and ventrolateral epicranium black, antennae dark brown; pronotum dark brown at lower sides and centrally on disc, yellow in upper sides and along anterior margin; elytra yellow in anterior half, black in posterior half; mesoscutellum black; legs dark brown, except yellow in proximal half of femora. Head: HW/ PW 1.1; EW/ VW 0.8; antenna as in Fig. 13, funicle compressed, length half of eighth antennomere. Thorax: Pronotum ( Fig. 30) with subacute lateral tubercle; PL/PW 1.2; elytra long rectangular, EL/PL 4.6; EL/ EW 2.3; anterior margin of protibia with 11 spines. Male genitalia: Aedeagus as in Fig. 28.

Variation. Size: length 7.5 mm; width 2.0 mm. In other anatomical aspects, the available specimens are quite homogeneous.

Natural History. The available specimens were collected in eastern Costa Rica during June, August, and November.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality, COSTA RICA: Heredia ( Map 1).

Etymology. The specific epithet zorropsis is a patronym that stems from the noun Zorro, the name of a film character, and the Latin suffix – opsis (likeness) and refers to the Zorro-like mask exhibited on the frons of the available specimens.
