Rhaphiodon echinus is endemic to Brazil and occurs in the Central-West (only Goiás State), Southeast and Northeast regions, not only the states of Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte as previously reported by BFG (2015). In RN, it was collected in areas of the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest, in restinga and semideciduous forests, including some populations in conservation units. This species was classified as NT because its extent of occurrence does not fit in any of the threatened IUCN (2001) criteria.
