Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) kunmingensis Franz View in CoL
Scydmaenus kunmingensis Franz, 1988: 24 View in CoL .
Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) kunmingensis Franz View in CoL ; Vít, 2004: 226.
( Figs 13–18 View FIGURES 13–18 )
Type material examined. Holotype ( CHINA): ♂, three labels ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 13–18 ): “CHINA: YUNNAN / Kunming X.86 / Rougemont / ( Scydmaenidae )” [white, handwritten], “ Scydmaenus / kunmingensis m. / det. H.Franz ” [white, handwritten and printed], “ Holotypus ” [red, handwritten] ( NHMW) . Paratype: ♀, “ Sichuan, Leshan / China , X.1986 ” [white, handwritten], and standard yellow “ PARATYPUS ” label ( NHMW) .
Revised diagnosis. Male. Legs modified, with each mesotibia bearing long and robust apical tooth; metaventrite modified, with long and deep median impression; head and pronotum virtually impunctate; head indistinctly transverse, with small eyes; tempora in dorsal view nearly twice as long as eye; pronotum indistinctly longer than broad, with four distinct antebasal pits; aedeagus in dorsal view with conspicuously broadened apical region with rounded sides and subtriangular median apical projection; in lateral view median lobe strongly bent at an obtuse angle near middle, with tip additionally indistinctly bent dorsad; sides of ostium with rows of setae; endophallus with two tubular projections with pointed apices, one short and one much longer.
Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13–18 ) elongate and strongly convex, uniformly brown, covered with light brown setae; BL 2.53 mm.
Head in dorsal view broadest at eyes, indistinctly transverse, HL 0.45 mm, HW 0.50 mm; vertex and frons confluent, evenly convex; supraantennal tubercles feebly marked; tempora in dorsal view nearly twice as long as eye; eye weakly convex, in lateral view only slightly oval. Frons and vertex virtually impunctate; setae relatively long and dense, suberect, distributed on sides of vertex and frons and directed anteromesad, elongate median region of head asetose. Antenna slender, AnL 1.30 mm; scape and pedicel strongly elongate, antennomeres 3–6 each elongate (5 strongly so), 7–8 each about as long as broad, each slightly asymmetrical, 9–10 each distinctly elongate, 11 slightly shorter than 9–10 combined, twice as long as broad.
Pronotum in dorsal view broadest near anterior third; PL 0.70 mm, PW 0.65 mm; anterior margin and sides in anterior third rounded, sides in posterior half nearly straight and strongly converging posterad; posterior margin nearly straight; base with two lateral pairs of small but deep and sharply marked pits, inner pits distinctly larger than outer ones, distances between all pits subequal. Pronotal disc impunctate; setae short, sparse and erect.
Elytra together oval, broadest indistinctly in front of middle, EL 1.38 mm, EW 1.13 mm, EI 1.22. Humeral calli prominent; basal impressions short but distinct, anterior portion of suture slightly elevated and demarcated by shallow grooves; elytral apices separately rounded. Elytra covered with punctures more distinct than those on head and pronotum but fine and inconspicuous; setae slightly thicker than those on head and pronotum and longer than those on pronotum, moderately dense and long, suberect, forming on each elytron distinct waving pattern, with those on anterior half directed posterad and posterolaterad, those on sides in posterior 2/3 directed posterolaterad and laterad, and on apices again posterad. Hind wings present, functional.
Legs moderately long, robust, mesotibiae modified, each with large apical tooth; protarsomeres moderately broadened.
Metaventrite modified, with elongate, deep median impression.
Aedeagus ( Figs 14–17 View FIGURES 13–18 ) moderately elongate, AeL 0.60 mm; median lobe in dorsal view with broadened apical region, which has rounded sides and small subtriangular median apical projection, in lateral view basal half of median lobe distinctly broader than distal half, strongly bent at an obtuse angle near middle, with tip additionally indistinctly bent dorsad; sides of ostium with rows of setae; endophallus with two tubular projections with pointed apices, one short and one much longer.
Female. Externally similar to male; differs in unmodified legs and metaventrite. BL 2.45 mm; HL 0.45 mm, HW 0.49 mm, AnL 1.20 mm; PL 0.70 mm, PW 0.68 mm; EL 1.30 mm, EW 1.10 mm, EI 1.18.
Distribution. Sichuan, Yunnan.
Remarks. Possible synonym of S. vestitus ( Sharp, 1874) ; aedeagus of the latter species in lateral view was illustrated by Franz (1985: 108, fig. 21) and seems identical to that of S. kunmingensis , including the same sites where two slender and pointed endophallic structures are projecting dorsad. Setae surrounding the ostium were not illustrated for S. vestitus , but were mentioned in Franz’s redescription. The aedeagus of S. vestitus in ventral or dorsal view must be examined to verify status of S. kunmingensis . The paratype female from Sichuan is externally very similar to the holotype male from Yunnan, including the pattern of setae on the head and elytra. However, it may not be possible to unambiguously associate males and females of this species if they come from distant localities and no males are known from Sichuan yet.
