Type material examined. Holotype ♂, Japan: Horoka, Kamishihoro-cho, Tokachi , Hokkaido, 22. vi. 1997, leg. M. Iwasa ( OUAVM).
Diagnosis. The male of C. yezoana sp. nov. can be recognized by blackish thorax and abdomen with greyish microtrichose, yellow legs, and surstylus not bifurcated apically.
Description. Male ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28–31 ; holotype). Head: eyes reddish brown; frons brownish yellow, eye margin brown; face and gena yellow; occiput dark brown; postpedicel black, basally yellow and approximately 2 times as long as wide; pedicel yellow; arista black and short-haired; palpus white, spatulate, and with comparatively weak subapical seta; proboscis yellow; vibrissal angle with 1 strong vibrissae and 1 subvibrissa. Chaetotaxy (black): 4 fr, 3 or (1 proclinate, 2 lateroclinate), 1 vti (strong), 1 vte (weak), 1 oc, 1 poc.
Thorax: thin greyish microtrichose; scutum and scutellum black, proepisternum yellow in ventral half and black in dorsal half, with sparse long hairs; anepisternum, anepimeron and katatergite black; katepisternum ventrally yellow and dorsally black; meron brown; anatergite and metanotum black. Chaetotaxy: 2 pprn, 2 npl, 1 prest iar, 2+3 dc, 2 sa, 2 pa, 1 dsc (developed), 1 apsc (small), 1 prepst, 1 prepm, 1 strong and 2 weak anepst, 1 kpst. Wings: slightly tinged with brown; veins R 4+5 and M almost parallel; vein A 1 +CuA 2 extending to wing margin; calypter yellow, with hairs marginally; halteres whitish yellow. Legs ( Fig 28 View FIGURES 28–31 ): yellow; all femora with long hairs on ventral surface; fore tibia with 1 ad and 1 pd near middle, and 3 preapicals; mid tibia with 2 ad near middle and 1 pd at basal one-third and 1 pd at distal one-third; hind tibia with 1 ad and 1 pd at distal two-fifths and 1 ad and 1 pd at one-fifth, and 3–4 preapicals.
Abdomen: tergites black and thinly microtrichose, covered by short setulae and each tergite laterally and posteriorly with comparatively long setae; sternite IV round quadrangle; sternite V ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 28–31 ) prominently bilobate (brown) posteriorly, covered by hairs; epandrium ( Figs 30, 31 View FIGURES 28–31 ) well developed, covered by setulae and with several pairs of distinct setae posterioly; surstylus ( Figs 30, 31 View FIGURES 28–31 ) slender and pigmented, and both close each other apically; cercal plate covered by setulae, with a pair of long setae.
Length. Body, 7.0 mm; wing, 5.2 mm.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido)
Etymology. This species is named after former given name of locality (Hokkaido) where the holotype was collected.
Remarks. This species is similar to Cordilura tartariana Ozerov, 2007 in structure of male surstyli, but differs from it in the following characteristics: scutum black; katepisternum anteroventrally yellow and posterodorsally black; meron brown. In C. tartariana , scutum yellowish; katepisternum and meron wholly yellow.
