Perennial, rhizome slender, stem filiform, strongly branched, terete. Leaves submersed, variable in size, 20–200 mm long, 0.2–2 mm wide, 3-veined, acute to acuminate at apex, straight at base, stipules 10–70 mm long, adnate, convolute, fused with the leave for up to 65 mm, whitish. Spike 1–3 mm long, peduncle 30–50 mm long, as thick as the stem, submersed. Tepals 2 mm, anthers 1 mm long. Carpels 4, fruits 4 mm long. Stele of four bundles type, endodermis of U-type, interlacunar bundles present, subepidermal bundles absent.
This species distinguished from S. filiformis (Persoon) Boerner (1912: 713) and S. amblyophylla (C.A. Meyer) Holub (199: 364) by its convolute leaf sheaths and the acute to acuminate leaf apex.
Worldwide distribution: —Cosmopolitan; Europe, Africa, W Asia ( Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan), N, C and E Asia, Australia, North and South America.
Distribution in Iran: —North, Northwest, Central, Southeast, Southwest.
This species is distributed in different aquatic ecosystems of Iran. Detailed data on ecology and distribution are found in Abbasi et al. (2016).
Flowering time: —From spring to autumn.
