2. Skull length 2.2–2.4 times skull width; tail relatively shorter, 25–30% of head and body length; dorsum CONTEXT AND CONTENT. Order Peramelemorphia , Family Peramelidae , Subfamily Peramelinae . The genus Isoodon has 3 living species ( Groves 2005). A key to species of Isoodon , derived from Le Souef et al. (1926), Lyne and Mort (1981), and Menkhorst and Knight (2001), follows:
1. Ramus angle of mandible 103–107° and ramus width> 12 mm; tail long, 27–45% of head and body length; historical distribution mostly coastal from Cape York, Queensland brindled brown, buff, and black; distribution: Cape York, Queensland; coastal fringe from the Hawkesbury River to the Victorian border, New South Wales; coastal Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia; all of Tasmania …………………...……………………… Isoodon obesulus
Skull length ≤ 2.05 times skull width; dorsum golden brown streaked with black; historical distribution across mainland Australia, except perhaps Victoria; restricted to northern Western Australia, including several islands; Marchinton Island , Northern Territory ………………...… Isoodon auratus
