18. Stillingia sylvatica var. salicifolia Torrey (1828: 245) View in CoL .— Stillingia salicifolia (Torrey) Rafinesque (1832: 146) . Lectotype (here designated):— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Province and locality unknown, 1820, E. James s.n. (NY 00148784!, isolectotype NY 00148781!). [= Stillingia sylvatica Linnaeus (1767: 126) ].
Torrey (1828) described the taxon based on a collection by Edwin James during his journey through the Rocky Mountains in 1820. He provided a brief description of Stillingia sylvatica var. salicifolia (“ foliis lanceolatis, acutiusculis, crenatoserrulatis ”). Nonetheless, he did not mention the herbarium where a specimen was deposited and expressed doubts about the exact place of collection, because he emphasized “ Hab. on the Canadian? ”. According to Rogers (1951), S. sylvatica is the most northern species in North America and is within the limits of southern Kansas, United States. However, he did not mention in which herbarium the type collection was deposited. In the herbarium NY, where Torrey worked, the specimens NY 00148784 and NY 00148781 were found, and the former is chosen as the lectotype.
