Müller Argoviensis (1863) described Stillingia sanguinolenta with two varieties, S. sanguinolenta var. lanceolatum and S. sanguinolenta var. angustifolium . According to the author, the first variety was based on the syntypes Ehrenberg s.n. and Pavon s.n. Rogers (1951) mentioned the specimen Ehrenberg s.n. housed in B as the type of S. sanguinolenta and S. sanguinolenta var. lanceolata . Nevertheless, it seems that the author did not examine this material, since it is not currently deposited in the aforementioned herbarium. In the herbarium G, a specimen collected by Pavon (G 7888–106) was identified (in sched.) by McVaugh as the lectotype of S. sanguinolenta var. lanceolata . In the present study, McVaugh’s suggestion is followed and, therefore, this specimen is chosen as the lectotype. The var. lanceolata then is a homotypic synonym of the species, and an invalid name as autonym (ICN Art. 26.1).
