Hesperus Fauvel 1874 View in CoL
Hesperus Fauvel 1874: 200 View in CoL . Type species: Staphylinus rufipennis Gravenhorst 1802 View in CoL , designated by Lucas (1920: 324).
= Onthostygnus Sharp 1884: 392 View in CoL . Type species: Onthostygnus fasciatus Sharp, 1884 View in CoL , designated by virtual monotypy (second species described in 1885). Note: as new synonym of Hesperus Navarrete-Heredia et al. (2002: 338) View in CoL .
Notes: Among the 209 valid species currently known for the globally distributed genus Hesperus View in CoL , only 10 of them have been recorded from the Neotropical region. Eight of these species were cited from South America and never revised after their original description. As it happens with other species-rich genera of Philonthina View in CoL , there is broad consensus on the non-monophyly of Hesperus View in CoL ( Schillhammer 2002, 2016; Li & Zhou 2011; Chani- Posse 2014a). Furthermore, the so-called Hesperus View in CoL complex appears to be a rather basal group of Philonthina View in CoL , far from the Neotropical lineage ( Chani-Posse et al. 2018). The current concept of the genus is that of Smetana (1995: 489).
