Spheniscus Humboldti Meyen, 1834a: 110 View in CoL , pl. 21.
Now: Spheniscus humboldti Meyen, 1834a . See Hellmayr & Conover (1948a: 10), Falla & Mougin (1979: 134).
Holotype: ZMB 14469 ( Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 85 sub “ Aptenodytes ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Mai ” ( Lichtenstein 1832) [= 2–20 May 1831; see Meyen’s itinerary] in “ Peru ” [= Callao, Peru; see below].
Type locality. Meyen (1834a: 112) listed “ Perú ” as the homeland of this species, but specified that he ( Meyen 1834a: 111, 1835: 53) encountered these penguins at Callao . We thus ascertain the type locality as Callao, Peru [12.07°S, 77.15°W]. GoogleMaps
