DIAGNOSIS: Mostly recognized by the relatively large body size, uniformly colored hemelytra, pale brown or yellowish forecoxa, femora often pale, apically with dark minute rounded spots (fig. 2), aedeagus with two spicules, the longer spicule with apex and base somewhat curved, small spicule comma-shaped, half as long as long spicule (fig. 7), medial sclerites of dorsal labiate plate curved, nearly equal in length to and distinctly more narrow than sclerotized ring (fig. 15). Males similar to those of O. fulvipes but that species distinguished by the shorter body size and femora without spots. Females similar to those of O. vittipennis and apparently not separable from that species in external characters. The latter species differing from O. funestus in having notably wide medial sclerites (fig. 17). Dark females with uniformly dark brown to black coxae and femora not separable from those of O. coriaceus .
REDESCRIPTION: Male: Macropterous; length 6.2–7.4. COLORATION (fig. 2): Head: Dark brown; vertex with spot near inner margin of eye, sometimes barely visible; maxillary plate often with pale brown or yellowish stripe below antennal fossa; antennal segment I often yellowish or pale brown, segment II often dark brown, sometimes with yellowish base, segments III and IV sometimes yellowish or pale brown, paler than apex of segment II, antenna rarely uniformly dark brown; labium uniformly dark brown or labial segments I and II yellowish to pale brown. Thorax: Pronotum and pleurites dark brown to black; evaporatorium yellowish or at least with yellowish posterior margin; scutellum uniformly dark brown to black; forecoxa often yellowish or pale brown, often darkened at apex; femora pale brown or yellowish, sometimes darkened apically, with a few series of rounded brown spots apically and along fore and hind margins; tibia yellowish, darkened apically and sometimes basally, with minute spots at bases of spines; tarsi dark brown to black; hemelytra dark brown to black; membrane typically uniformly pale brown, sometimes with pale areas basally. Abdomen: Uniformly dark brown to black. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Similar to O. bivittatus (as in figs. 22 A-C, E, 23 A, D). STRUCTURE AND MEASUREMENTS: Body 3.5–3.9× as long as width of pronotum. Head: Shape of head and eye similar to those of O. bivittatus (as in figs. 20 B, 21 A, G); head 1.2–1.3× as wide as high, vertex 1.6–2.0× as wide as eye; eye located at a small distance from anterior pronotal margin; antennal fossa located close to inferior margin of eye; antennal segment I longer than diameter of eye, segment II not incrassate, 1.0–1.2× as long as basal width of pronotum, 1.4–1.7× as long as width of head; labium reaching middle coxa. Thorax: Pronotum 1.8–2.3× as wide as long and 1.3–1.5× as wide as head with posterior margin straight or slightly concave, lateral margins of pronotum not carinate, calli slightly raised; hind femora relatively narrow, approximately 1.5× as wide as middle femora. GENITALIA: Aedeagus with two spicules, long spicule longer than dorsal wall of theca, somewhat curved at apex and at base, short spicule distinctly shorter than dorsal wall of theca and half as long as longer one, comma-shaped (fig. 7); parameres as in fig. 11.
Female: Brachypterous, rarely macropterous; length 4.1–5.3. COLORATION: Similar to male but often darker, sometimes uniformly dark brown to black except for paler posterior margin of evaporatorium, antennal segments I, III, and IV, rarely only posterior margin of evaporatorium area and antennal segments III and IV pale brown. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: As in male. STRUCTURE AND MEASUREMENTS: Body 2.2–3.1× as long as width of pronotum. Head: 1.2–1.3× as wide as high; vertex 2.4–3.1× as wide as eye; antennal segment II 1.0–1.2× as long as basal width of pronotum, 1.2–1.4× as long as width of head. Thorax: Pronotum with concave posterior margin, 1.9–2.1× as wide as long and 1.1–1.4× as wide as head; length of hemelytra in brachypterous females ranging from reaching middle of abdominal segment VII to covering entire abdomen, typically reaching middle of abdominal segment VIII, claval commissure as long as inner claval margin, posterior and lateral margins of hemelytra rounded, shape of hemelytra in macropterous females distinctly more oval than in male. GENITALIA: Sclerotized rings oval, with comparatively robust walls, medial sclerites distinctly curved, twin-coned, nearly equal in length to and distinctly more narrow than sclerotized ring (fig. 15); posterior wall of bursa copulatrix with trapeziform sclerite uniformly sclerotized, incision on the anterior margin narrow and not reaching middle of sclerite, anterior angles of this sclerite somewhat dentate, posterior margin without sclerites (as in fig. 18, bivittatus ); vulva with curved sclerites forming a circle (as in fig. 19, vittipennis ).
DISTRIBUTION: The species is distributed in the Eastern Asia. It is widely known from the Russian Far East and Japan, reported from South Korea and northeastern China. New record for Mongolia.
HOSTS: Kerzhner (1978) reported the species from Artemisia montana (Nakai) (as Artemisia gigantea Kitam. ) ( Asteraceae ) and Artemisia stelleriana (Bess.) (Asteraceae) . Some specimens from the collection of ZISP were collected from Artemisia sp. (Asteraceae) by Narchuk.
DISCUSSION: The original description of O. beresovskii by Reuter (1906) was based on females collected from Sichuan Province, China. In addition to the nominal variety, Reuter distinguished three varieties of O. beresovskii , based on coloration of antennae and legs: O. beresovskii fuscipes , O. beresovskii tibialis , and O. beresovskii fulvipes . The last was renamed by Stichel (1958) to O. beresovskii chinensis as the name of the taxon was preoccupied. Our observations showed that O. beresovskii and all its varieties are indistinguishable from O. funestus in coloration, external morphology, and structure of the genitalia. This species is widely known from Eastern Asia, is very variable in coloration, and includes specimens with different combinations of the characters used by Reuter for separation of varieties of O. beresovskii . As a consequence, O. beresovskii Reuter, 1906 and all its varieties are synonymized with O. funestus Jakovlev, 1881 .
