Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 74); reported from Kavieng, New Ireland as Zanclus canescens by Fowler (1931: 344). Specimens photographed in Kavieng region on 1–3 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 28 Mar. 2007. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 7 m depth, by Dean Tully on 18 Sept. 2012, another at St. KVG 17 on the Bismarck Sea side of northern Kavieng District by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). QM and ZMH material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Panama, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe and Kermadec islands, and Rapa. Found in turbid inner lagoons, reef flats, and clear seaward rocky and coral reefs, 1–182 m depth. Marine.
