Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Naseus lituratus by Cuvier & Valenciennes (1835: 285), based on MNHN material. Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell on 21 and 28 June 2014 ; a specimen photographed at St. KVG 11 by Serge Andréfouët on 16 Aug. 2014, another t St. KVG28 (southeast of New Hanover ) by Serge Andréfouët on 24 Aug. 2014 .
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in lagoons and seaward reefs, 0–90 m depth. Marine.
