Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed in Kavieng Lagoon by Jeff Kinch during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in 2013 (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 15, as N. magnificus ); a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island , off eastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Hawaiian and Pitcairn islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in burrows on silt or mud slopes, 6–70 m depth. Marine.
