Status at New Ireland. Originally described in part from Port Praslin, New Ireland by Lesson (1831: 146–147); reported as P. koelreuteri (non Pallas 1770) by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1837: 181).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 3.—General distribution: Southern Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Fiji and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland ( Australia). Amphibious air-breather that spends most of its time out of the water; able to meet its oxygen requirements as long as it stays wet; typically resting on mud, or rocks, with their tails dipped in the water, 0–1 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
