Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Julis dorsalis by Peters (1877: 843); subsequently reported from Kavieng as Thalassoma schwanefeldi by Kailola (1975: 192). KFRS material. Specimens photographed at St. KVG18 (south side of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District) by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014, and at St. KVGPMT50 (southeast of New Hanover) by Serge Andréfouët on 24 Aug. 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: South and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe, Norfolk and Austral islands. Found in small groups on coral reefs, 0–15 m depth. Marine.
