Gerres filamentosus Cuvier View in CoL [ex Russell] 1829—Whipfin silverbiddy
Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover by Peters (1877: 832); reported from Kulineua and Matalanaua rivers, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 198–199). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Adults on shallow soft bottoms adjacent to coral reefs, also entering lower reaches of rivers and streams, juveniles in estuaries, 0–50 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
