Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Feni Island, Namatanai District, New Ireland, by Munro (1958: 181); also reported from Ningin Island, New Ireland as Caranx stellatus by Munro (1958: 182); subsequently reported from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73), and from from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 and 21 June 2014. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 18 July 2008; a video of a specimen taken at Tungelo Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–46 m depth, St. KR104, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Panama, north to Izu and Ogasawara islands, south to Dampier Archipelago ( Western Australia), New South Wales ( Australia), Norfolk Island and Rapa. Adults found on coral or rocky reefs, juveniles inshore in sandy lagoons, 0–190 m depth. Marine.
