Status at New Ireland. Originally described from Port Praslin, New Ireland as Serranus analis by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1828b: 307), based on MNHN 72569 (holotype); also reported by Lesson (1831: 235– 236); a video of a specimen taken in Albatross Passage , southwestern Kavieng District , at 3–13 m depth, St. KR 53, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 3.—General distribution: East Africa east to Mariana and Society islands, north to Ryukyu Islands. Seaward reefs, 13–80 m depth. Marine.
