Status at New Ireland. First recorded from of islands of Namatanai District, southern New Ireland as Hirundichthys oxycephalus oxycephalus by Shakhovskoy & Parin (2013: 521).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 5.—General distribution: eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean; north to sea of Japan, south to New South Wales ( Australia). Epipelagic in oceanic waters, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
