Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Carteret Harbour, New Ireland as Exocoetus evolans by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1847: 138–144); subsequently reported as Exocoetus volitans by Munro (1958: 139).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 3.—General distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and warm temperate seas. Epipelagic in oceanic waters, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
