Status at New Ireland. New record; previously misidentified as Gymnothorax melanospilus (non Bleeker, 1855) by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 82), based on ZMH 16481.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 0.—General distribution: East Africa and Oman east to Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Australia. Found in crevices in lagoons and seaward coral reefs, 1–50 m depth. Marine.
