Comments: Cercyon obsoletus s.str. is known from southern ( Bulgaria) and western Europe ( Vorst 2009). According to Silfverberg (2004) the species is wide distributed in all Fennoscandian and Baltic territories, but possibly this data concerned to C. castanipennis . The matherials collected before 1945 from the region are not available and it is impossible to known which species ( C. obsoletus s.str. or C. castanipennis or both taxa) was sampled in the past and reported under the name “ C. lugubris Oliv. ” ( Bercio & Folwaczny 1979) from Cranz [Zelenogradsk], Loppöhnen [Rybnoe], Königsberg [Kaliningrad] and Insterburg [Chernyakhovsk]. The data about the species from monograph dealing with water beetles (Alekseev 2010) heerwith is defined and confirmed.
