status

47. S. wolgensis (Willd.) Besser ex Sprengel View in CoL , Ind. Sem. Horti Halensis 7 (1818)

(inch Otites orae-syvashicae Klokov ).

Often 100 cm or more, with very diffuse panicle of small white flowers; lower part of stem with hairs of variable length, usually more than 1 mm. Petal-claw glabrous; filaments hairy. 2« = 24. S.E. Europe. Bu Ju Rm Rs (C, W,?K, E). The white petals, unpleasant flower-scent and wide-angled lower panicle-branches provide good characters in living material. The complete intersterility with S. otites sensu stricto emphasizes the distinctness of this species, but the status of several taxa possessing various combinations of the distinguishing characters is as yet quite uncertain. These include S. krymensis Kleopow , Jour. Inst. Bot. Acad. Sci. Ukr. 9 (17): 115 (1936), described from Krym,

with glabrous filaments, and Otites maeotica Klokov in Kotov, Fl. R SS Ucr. 4: 658 (1952), and Otites moldavica Klokov , Jour. Bot. Acad. Sci. Ukr. 5(1): 24 (1948), both described from Ukraine.
