Microrhopala rubrolineata (Mannerheim) View in CoL
( Fig. 139 View FIGURES 122–140 )
Collected specimen. ARIZONA: Pima Co., Coronado National Forest, Soldier Trail , 5.iii.2017, C.S. Eiseman, on Encelia farinosa , # CSE3166 (1 adult, ZFMK) .
Hosts. Asteraceae : Ambrosia chenopodiifolia (Benth.) W.W. Payne ( Goeden & Ricker 1976a) , A. psilostachya DC. ( Goeden & Ricker (1976c, as Microrhopala xerene ), Flourensia cernua DC. ( Richerson & Boldt 1995) , Solidago velutina DC. (as S. californica / californicus ; Brisley 1925; Jones & Brisley 1925). None of the other purported larval hosts listed by Staines (2006) are reported as such by his cited references, one of which is Thomas & Werner (1981), a checklist of grass-feeding insects that does not mention this beetle. The source for Staines’ (2006, 2015) record of Isocoma menziesii (Hook. & Arn.) G.L.Nesom is unclear; it does not seem to be mentioned in any of his cited sources and this plant is not listed by Clark et al. (2004).
Adult or ambiguous hosts reported for Microrhopala rubrolineata include Ambrosia acanthicarpa Hook. ( McCauley 1938) , A. ambrosioides (Delpino) W.W. Payne ( Bibby 1961) , A. chamissonis Greene ( Goeden & Ricker 1974; as M. xerene ), A. confertiflora DC. ( Goeden & Ricker 1975) , A. dumosa (A. Gray) W.W. Payne ( Goeden & Ricker 1976b) , “ Aster ” ( Clark et al. 2004; record not found in cited sources), Bahiopsis chenopodina (Greene) E.E. Schill. & Panero , B. tomentosa (A. Gray) E.E. Schill. & Panero ( Clark et al. 2004) , Brickellia vernicosa B.L. Rob. ( Moldenke 1971) , Encelia californica Nutt. , E. farinosa A. Gray ex Torr. ( Clark 1983) , E. halimifolia Cav. ( Moldenke 1971) , E. palmeri Vasey & Rose ( Clark et al. 2004) , Hazardia squarrosa Greene ( Clark 1983) , Haplopappus Cass. ( Moore 1937; possibly = Hazardia or Isocoma ), Heterotheca grandiflora Nutt. ( Fall 1901) , Isocoma veneta (Kunth) Greene ( Clark 1983) , and Xanthium strumarium L. ( Hilgendorf & Goeden 1983). The Missouri records from Helianthus hirsutus Raf. ( McCauley 1938) and Helianthus sp. (Riley & Enns 1979) likely represent misidentifications of M. rileyi Clark ( Clark et al. 2004) .
Biology. No details of the leaf mine have been recorded beyond that it is “large” ( Brisley 1925; Jones and Brisley 1925).
Notes. Our barcoded specimen is the sole representative of BIN BOLD:ADO9194.
