Distribution: Tamaulipas ( Mexico) to Bolivia, N Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Trinidad.
Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Revised by LaVal (1973 a). Apparently closely related to riparius and ruber ; see Ruedi and Mayer (2001).
