Diagnosis:— Cardamine kuankuoshuiense M. T. An, Yun Lin & Y. B. Yang is morphologically most similar to both Cardamine griffithii J. D. Hooker & Thomson (1861: 146) and Cardamine multijuga Franchet (1886: 399) based on rhizomes, basal leaves and leaflets in shape. However it differs from both of them in herbs 15–25 cm tall, scapose, with a few stolons, stems terete, cauline leaves absent (vs herbs 30–100 cm tall, scape absent, without stolons, stems striate angled, cauline leaves present in both Cardamine griffithii and Cardamine multijuga ). More detailed morphological differences among these three species are given in Table 1.

Type:— CHINA. Guizhou: Suiyang, Kuankuoshui National Nature Reserve, alt. 1410 m, on damp precipice or between moist rock crevices in evergreen broad-leaved forests or mixed needle-leaved and evergreen broad-leaved forests in carst mountains, 2 May 2015, M. T. An & Y. B. Yang 2015-0426 (fl.) ( holotype GZAC!, isotypes HUFD!, PE!).

Herbs perennial, 15–25 cm tall, scapose, glabrous throughout. Rhizomes short, with a few stolons. Stolons from rhizome or lower stem nodes, to 30 cm long. Stems erect, simple, leafless or rarely 1 degenerated bracteiform leaved. Basal leaves rosulate, 7–13 cm long, fleshy, 21–31-foliolata; petiole 2–3 cm long; leaflets reniform, ovate or suborbicular, 2–7 mm long, 2.5–8 mm wide, base cordate, margin entire or repand-crenate, apex rounded or emarginated, with a petiolule to 2–4 mm long; lateral leaflets smaller than terminal one. Leaves on stolons simple; petiole 4–7 mm long; leaf blade reniform, cordate or suborbicular, 3–7 mm long, 4–9 mm wide, base cordate, margin entire or repand-crenate, apex rounded or emarginated. Cauline leaves absent, or rarely 1 degenerated bracteiform leaved. Degenerated bracteiform leaf 1–2.5 cm long, pinnatisect;

lobes lanceolate. Racemes terminal, 10–18-flowered, 1-bracteate; bracts lanceolate, 1–2.5 mm long, pinnatisect. Flowering pedicels 0.8–2.5 cm long, slender, divaricate, usually straight. Sepals 4, narrowly ovate or oblong, 2–3 mm long, 1–2 mm wide. Petals 4, obovate, reddish, pale or light blue, 5–7 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, base tapering into a claw 0.5–1.2 mm long, apex rounded or subemarginate. Stamens 6; filaments 3.5–4.5 mm long; anthers oblong, 0.5–0.8 mm long. Ovules 3–6 per ovary. Fruits (Siliqua) linear, 1–1.6 cm long, 1.2–2 mm in diam. Seeds brown, reniform, ca. 1 mm long, wingless.

Phenology:—Flowering from April to May, fruiting from May to June.

Habitat:—This species grows on damp precipice or between moist rock crevices in evergreen broad-leaved forests or mixed needle-leaved and evergreen broad-leaved forests in carst mountains at altitudes of 1400–1430 m, comprises about 180 individuals growing in four populations within a nature reserve.

Distribution:— Cardamine kuankuoshuiense is only known from its type locality, Kuankuoshui National Nature Reserve, Suiyang County, north Guizhou Province, southwest China.

Etymology:— Cardamine kuankuoshuiense is named after its type locality, Kuankuoshui National Nature Reserve.

Vernacular name:—Kuan kuo shui sui mi qi in Chinese Pinyin.

IUCN Red List Category:— Cardamine kuankuoshuiense is known only from the type collection and is therefore given the assessment of Data Deficient (DD) according to IUCN (2001) criteria.
