Styringomyia americana Alexander, 1914 View in CoL , nomen dubium

Styringomyia americana Alexander, 1914: 231 View in CoL (description), Figure 1 View FIGURES 1 3. 1 (wing venation).

MATERIAL EXAMINED. Holotype. Sex unknown, Mallali, Demerara (ca. 6º46N, 58º10W), British Guyana, March 8, 1913, H. S. Parish ( USNM). Most of the specimen pinned; left wing mounted on separate slide.

DESCRIPTION. Dimensions: see Table I.

REMARKS. Alexander (1914) superficially described this species based on two broken specimens lacking terminalia. Because the diagnostic features of the Neotropical Styringomyia species refers to the morphology of the male terminalia, the taxonomic identity of the speciesgroup taxon S. americana cannot be determined from its namebearing type, and according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999), it can be considered a nomen dubium. The holotype was identified by Alexander (1914: 231) as a male, although in the holotype label it is indicated that the specimen is a female. The information available does not allow the unambiguous determination of the sex of this specimen.
