Abies numidica de Lannoy ex Carrière (1866: 106) View in CoL
The protologue of Abies numidica ( Carrière 1866: 106) includes a complete and extensive description of this plant, a diagnosis to differentiate it from A. pinsapo , and several comments about the locality: “confinée dans la Kabylie algérienne, cette ancienne province à laquelle les Romains avaient donné le nom de Numidie. Elle habite tout particulièrement les monts Tababor et Grand-Babor, à une altitude assez élevée pour que, dans certains endroits, la neige soit presque permanente”.
The protologue also includes relevant comments referring to the studied gatherings: “A plusieurs reprises, il a eu l’obligeance de m’envoyer des échantillons à divers états de cette espèce, et c’est d’après ceux-ci que j’ai fait la description ci-dessus”.
Farjon (2010: 108) mentioned “Type not designated”. We have located a specimen relevant at P, with barcode P00507232. This specimen bears a stem well preserved, with leaves, and a label annotated as “Herb. Mus. Paris. / Abies numidica Delannoy / Mt Tababor Kabylie province / In Constantine / Donné par M. Delannoy ” ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ). Maybe this specimen could be treated as a “ syntype ”. However, it is clearly relevant that the specimen lacks any annotation by Carrière that undoubtedly links it to the material mentioned by Carrière in the prologue. The specimen does not have the collection date. In addition, there is also no evidence or any link to consider the specimen at P as part of the material sent by Lannoy to Carrière before the publication of the protologue. Therefore, unfortunately, this material cannot be indubitably considered as original material according to ICN Art. 9.4 .
However, the specimen P00507232 is the only material that we have found collected by Lannoy in the localities cited in the protologue (Constantine, Kabylie, Tababor). The specimen is well preserved and clearly represents the traditional concept and current application of A. numidica ( Alizoti et al. 201, Farjon 2017). This material is designated as the neotype of the name .
